Fatherlessness: The Silent Impact on Self-Esteem

Fatherlessness
Fatherlessness is not just a family issue but also a psychological and social concern that affects future generations. Low self-esteem is not formed instantly. It develops gradually through the absence of support, love, and validation. (Illustration: Author's Doc.)

Have you ever wondered how a child learns their own worth? For many children, it begins at home through the presence and support of both parents. However, not all children grow up with that completeness.

Recent data from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), based on Indonesia’s National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) 2024, shows that around 15.9 million children in Indonesia grow up without an active father figure.

This absence, whether physical or emotional, can create a gap in a child’s development, especially in shaping confidence and emotional stability, which are closely related to self-esteem.

Understanding Fatherlessness and Its Impact on Self-Esteem

Fatherlessness can significantly affect self-esteem because the absence of a father figure may disrupt emotional development, lower self-confidence, and weaken a person’s sense of identity.

Fatherlessness itself is a condition in which a child grows up without the presence or emotional involvement of a father, either physically or psychologically. In child development, a father plays an important role in shaping emotional stability and confidence. Without consistent interaction and guidance, children may experience feelings of insecurity and confusion in understanding themselves.

Furthermore, this condition is closely linked to self-esteem, which is strongly influenced by the family environment, especially parental involvement. Adolescents who grow up without a father may develop negative self-perceptions, such as feeling unworthy or lacking confidence.

In addition, they may struggle with emotional regulation and social relationships, affecting their ability to build trust and form a positive identity.

Beyond Financial Support: The Importance of Emotional Presence

To be sure, the absence of a father does not always indicate a lack of responsibility or care. Many fathers must prioritize work to provide for their families, which can limit their time and presence at home.

While this role is essential for the family’s survival and does not necessarily reflect a lack of love, financial support alone is not enough to fulfill a child’s developmental needs.

Emotional presence, guidance, and validation from a father remain equally important. Without this balance, children may still experience emotional gaps that influence their self-esteem.

Building Supportive Environments for Future Generations

Fatherlessness is not just a family issue but also a psychological and social concern that affects future generations. Low self-esteem is not formed instantly. It develops gradually through the absence of support, love, and validation.

Therefore, awareness of the importance of a father’s role needs to be increased. Families, communities, and society should work together to create supportive environments for individuals who grow up without a father.

In the end, every child deserves to feel valued, confident, and complete.
